Robert Svoboda became interested in studying yoga in all its forms when he heard the Dalai Lama speak in Nepal in 1974. Powerfully affected, his path was diverted from medical school by the reputation of Ayurveda (East Indian traditional medicine). "He liked its reputation for being a holistic, or"whole-istic" medical system."
He became the first Westerner ever to graduate from a college of Ayurveda (in 1980) and be licensed to practice Ayurveda in India. He lived in India 1973-80 and 1982-86. Since 1985, he travels the world lecturing, consulting, teaching and writing. He has written more than a dozen books and serves as Adjunct Faculty at the Ayurvedic Institute, Albuquerque, NM, and Bastyr University, Kenmore, WA.
Svoboda was initiated into the Pokot tribe of northern Kenya as its first white member and written three books on Indian astrology.
